Personal Giving Stories
A WIN-WIN-WIN SITUATION
Win-win isn’t quite good enough for Dr. Stewart Fordham (’70 M.D.). Instead, he’s using a planned giving strategy that he believes is a win-win-win. Here’s how: First, by securing a loved one’s financial future with lifetime income; second, by providing him with valuable tax savings; and third, by providing support to the College of Medicine.
“I always hoped to give back to this University that I’m so fond of, but when I finally had the resources I didn’t know how to go about it,” says Dr. Fordham. “Discovering through my accountant that I could offer support to UIC down the road and also assist a family member now was eye-opening for me.” The tax savings was simply icing on the cake.
The charitable gift annuity (CGA) worked so well for his family member that Dr. Fordham established a second life-income gift a year or so later. This second gift will also provide income to his loved one. However, if he survives her, he will then receive the income for the rest of his life.
The decision to give back was an easy one for Dr. Fordham, who appreciates the excellent education he received at UIC and the opportunity to study and practice medicine in Chicago. He has always been aware of and grateful for what UIC provided—and hoped to be able to make a significant contribution. The gift plans that provide lifetime income were perfect because they allowed him to achieve numerous objectives.
“As a perpetual student I’m interested in the educational process and its importance in our country’s future,” says Dr. Fordham. “UIC has a tremendous responsibility along with tremendous needs, and I’d like to think fellow alumni will consider what this University has done for them and then respond by doing what they can to help.”
